Are you considering a vacation in the coming year? If so, in addition to picking your destination and coordinating all the details, you’ll also have to decide where to stay while visiting. With so many options these days, from traditional hotels to Airbnb, VRBO, and even private homes, it can be hard to figure out what will be best for your specific trip. In this blog, we’re going to cover the top reasons why booking direct can enhance your vacation experience. From direct communication to upfront pricing, going directly to the property manager or owner can alleviate tons of stress and confusion, granting you peace of mind so you can focus on the fun parts of travel planning. Let’s dig into the top 5 reasons to book direct on your next vacation.

1. Better Rates: Save on Your Stay

Honolulu, Hawaii at night

Booking directly with the property owner or manager often leads to cost savings. Third-party platforms typically charge additional service fees, which can inflate the total cost of your rental. They can also change their rates at a moment’s notice. By booking directly, these fees are bypassed, often resulting in more competitive rates. This means more budget for your vacation activities or perhaps an extended stay.

2. Personalized Service: Tailored to Your Needs

One of the most significant advantages of direct booking is the personalized service it offers. By communicating directly with the property owner or manager, you have the opportunity to discuss your specific needs and preferences. Whether it’s a special request for your accommodation or seeking local advice, this direct line of communication ensures that your vacation is tailored to your desires.

3. Flexibility: Your Vacation, Your Rules

family arriving at hotel

Flexibility is key to a stress-free vacation, and booking direct offers just that. We all know the feeling of realizing your flight lands at 9 am, but your room won’t be ready until 3 pm. Instead of schlepping to a local business with all your luggage and family members in tow, wouldn’t it be nice to know your property manager is able to help? With the potential to negotiate check-in and check-out times, payment options, and cancellation policies, you have the freedom to arrange terms that align with your travel plans. This flexibility is often unavailable with third-party platforms, where policies are set and inflexible.

4. Access to Local Knowledge: Insider Tips for an Authentic Experience

Property owners and managers are often locals who possess valuable insider knowledge. They can provide recommendations for the best dining spots, hidden gems, and must-see attractions. This local insight can transform your vacation, offering experiences that are authentic and off the beaten path versus generic recommendations found on Yelp or Google. Travel like a local with recommendations from a local when you book directly with a property manager instead of an online travel agency (OTA).

5. Direct Communication: A Seamless Vacation Experience

Direct communication with the property owner or manager from the booking process through to your stay ensures a smooth and enjoyable experience. This direct line can be crucial for quick problem resolution, and it fosters a sense of security and trust throughout your vacation. If something goes wrong at your property, you won’t have to worry about submitting a service ticket through a third-party site. Just give your property manager a call, and we can address your issue immediately. It’s also wonderful to have a chain of communication instead of a call center where you never talk to the same person twice. Marina Hawaii Vacations has been in business since 1965, and our highly skilled, on-site team speaks English, Japanese, Cantonese, and Mandarin, so you can rest easy knowing a dedicated person is at your fingertips whenever you need them when you book direct on your next vacation.

Every December, Honolulu lights up for a month-long celebration that transforms the city’s downtown into a glowing canvas of holiday decorations and festive illumination. Complete with a 50-foot Christmas tree at Honolulu Hale, Honolulu City Lights is a family-friendly spectacle you have to see when you visit during the holiday season. Bring the family and snap pictures with Shaka Santa and Tutu Mele at the Electric Light Parade on December 2nd. The parade begins at 6:30 pm in downtown Honolulu. If you miss the parade, you can catch the decorative tree exhibition every day from December 3-29.

Located just minutes from downtown Honolulu, you’ll find Ilikai Tower, unit 1843. This beautiful 2-bed, 2-bath condo has space for six and has been recently updated with new bedding, furniture, and paintings. From lounging on the warm sand to swimming or surfing in the brilliantly blue water, it’s as close to heaven as you can possibly get. But, while the beach may take over your days, at night, if you’re looking to dip a toe into the local scene, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to go. To take the guesswork out of an excellent night out, we’ve curated a list of five of the best craft cocktail bars on Oahu. Our list includes award-winning cocktails, delicious bites, and some of the best folks in the business. So, read on and start planning your perfect night in Oahu with these craft cocktail bars.

Bar Leather Apron

bartender making a smoked cocktail

As Hawaii’s first-ever James Beard Award winner for Outstanding Bar, the team at Bar Leather Apron understands the reputation they’ve garnered and works hard to ensure each guest is treated to top-notch service and a beautifully sophisticated experience.

Duo Justin and Tom Park have dedicated themselves to providing a world-class cocktail experience in Honolulu. Their intimate cocktail bar is neatly tucked away on a mezzanine in a financial district office building lobby. And while the location may sound relatively lackluster, the experience is anything but. Here, you won’t find basic frozen Mai Tais, rather, this beloved cocktail has been reimagined into a multi-award-winning masterpiece that features Kiawe wood, which has been smoked in a hand-carved tiki box, signature Old Fashioned varieties, and Hawaii’s most robust whiskey collection, so no matter your preference you’ll find something you’ll love.

Aimed at delivering a luxury experience, parties are held to a maximum of four, and reservations are highly recommended, though walk-ins are welcome based on space. When visiting Honolulu, plan a perfect date night at Bar Leather Apron and let the team mesmerize you with their bespoke creations you’ll be dreaming about long after you return home.

Bevy

Fruity cocktail on a bar

Located in the vibrant Kaka‘ako neighborhood, Bevy takes the “local’s bar” concept and elevates it to a status of memorable craft experience. Offering uniquely designed cocktails that feature local ingredients, the bartenders invite you to embrace the more refined side of “beachy” drinks. Try the Upside Down, a fun take on the classic piña colada featuring fernet, Chartreuse, lime, pineapple, coconut, and lavender; this delicate blend of flavors awakens your palate to what island cocktails can be. With food brought to you by Doner Shack and Mami’s Empanadas, you can enjoy delicious bites while you sip your way through their happy hour specials, beer, or classic cocktails. The slightly hipster environment makes this a great spot for a casual yet unique night out in Oahu.

Manifest

Cold Moscow Mules close-up.

Manifest’s dynamic atmosphere transforms from a cozy café to a vibrant cocktail bar, and, if you hang around long enough, sometimes even a buzzing nightclub, giving you plenty of opportunities to find the vibe that’s perfect for you. At the forefront of Honolulu’s ever-changing cocktail scene, the team is ushering in an era of innovative flavors and unique twists on beloved classics. Signature drinks such as the Manifest Mule – a blend of Buffalo Trace bourbon, zesty ginger beer, fresh lime, and a unique homemade lilikoi shrub – underscore why it’s a celebrated spot both with locals and tourists alike.

Podmore

Passion fruit spritz cocktail

After a sun-soaked day on Oahu’s exquisite beaches, Podmore offers a seamless transition into the night with its elegant offerings. Created by Chef Anthony Rush and Katherine Nomura of Senia fame, this destination in historic Downtown Honolulu invites you to step away from the routine and into a space rich with history and beauty. By day, Podmore serves up a European-influenced brunch featuring the likes of a Full English Breakfast as well as cocktail selections that are as thoughtfully crafted as those you’ll find on the evening menu. After the sun sets, evening guests can indulge in a carefully curated dinner menu that includes everything from caviar to Wagyu Ribeye. With cocktails designed to complement the food, this is anything but an ordinary cocktail bar. Enjoy Podmore day or night, and get a taste of the ever-innovating craft cocktail scene in Oahu.

Blind Ox

bartender at a speakeasy making a drink

Our list of craft cocktail bars in Oahu wouldn’t be complete without one true speakeasy. Since opening in 2021, the Blind Ox has been delighting visitors with its Gatsby-esq ambiance and exclusive allure. The whiskey-forward cocktails paired with a sharable Asian/Hispanic fusion tapas-style menu make this a picture-perfect location for a fancy night out on your Hawaii vacation. Pair the Bull and Whip cocktail with the bone marrow tapas and enjoy a perfect marriage of flavors. The Wagyu-washed bourbon blends with the Kiawe Ranch bone marrow, creating a cohesive and delectable finish that is distinctly Hawaii. Reservations are recommended, and you’ll want to dress to impress for this outing.

KōHana Hawaiian Agricole Rum

rum poured into a rocks glass with a rustic background

First up, we’re checking out KōHana Agricole Rum. Kō means sugarcane in Hawaiian. Brought to Hawaii by early Polynesian settlers, the heirloom variety of Oahu has a flavor profile unique to the region. Hana means craft or work—a nod to the people who dedicate their time, energy, and attention to the distillation process.

KōHana Agricole Rum is carefully crafted from farm to bottle. Taking care to grow single varietals of sugarcane, which are then hand-harvested and processed into one of the finest cane rums in the world, you get a true taste of something uniquely Oahu in every sip. The distillery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers hourly distillery or farm tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. After your tour, stop by the tasting room for a classic, aged, or cocktail flight. Each is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to this Hawaiian classic spirit.

Naked Cow Dairy Farm & Creamery

butter making class

Next up, we’re checking the Naked Cow Dairy Farm & Creamery, Hawaii’s first and only producer of artisanal cheese, gourmet butter & cream top yogurt. Over the past 13 years, Naked Cow has worked tirelessly to provide the people of Hawaii and its visitors with quality products. Committed to the humane treatment of their animals, you’ll never find added hormones or antibiotics in Naked Cow products. They’re also proud supporters of other local businesses, sourcing all their products from local Hawaiian manufacturers. From their animal feed to specialty ingredients, every bite of Naked Cow products is a tribute to the region. When you plan your visit to Naked Cow Creamery, be sure to check out their cheese-making class for a delicious hands-on experience!

Kahuku Farms

adult male walking with young girl on a farm

For another unique hidden gem of Oahu’s food and drink scene, and in keeping with the theme of local farms, a visit to Kahuku Farms in North Shore is a family-friendly activity that will fill your day with delicious, farm-fresh food, tours of the grounds, and lessons in understanding where your food actually comes from.

When you book a tour at Kahuku Farms, you’ll get to see the process of getting fruits and veg from the farm to the grocery store. With over 100 years of experience and the freshest local produce on the island, the farmers will teach you what it takes to create a sustainable farm as you enjoy a tractor-pulled wagon ride across the land. Tours last about one hour. Afterward, stop by the café for some bites fresh from the farm and enjoy a picnic in the cool North Shore breeze.

Hawaiian Cooking Classes with Chef Linda

people attending a cooking class

If you’re looking for a romantic date night while on your Oahu vacation or just a unique cultural experience, booking a cooking class with Chef Linda is the way to go. With almost 40 years of experience in the food industry, she developed these classes so she could share her knowledge and passion for Hawaii’s ingredients with anyone curious to learn.

Held in Diamond Head, the classes provide everything you need, from equipment to ingredients. Afterward, you’ll gather with your fellow classmates for a delicious meal with a glass of wine, beer, or beverage of choice. You’ll also walk away with a keepsake of the night’s recipes, so you can relive the experience even after you’ve returned home.

Chef Linda offers three classes: Standard, Premium, and Private & Group. For more information or to book this unique culinary experience, be sure to check out the availability before you go, as on-site booking is not available.
